Stack

BLE Mesh · LoRaWAN · BACnet · MQTT

Overview

A comprehensive IoT platform managing 40,000+ connected devices across 1,000+ commercial buildings in 30+ states. The platform integrates BLE mesh, LoRaWAN, and BACnet protocols through a unified cloud-to-edge architecture, enabling controls, automation, real-time monitoring, and demand response ready infrastructure. Led product management through two acquisitions (CANDI → Altair → Siemens), scaling the platform from a few buildings proof-of-concept to an enterprise-grade smart building ecosystem.

The Problem

Inherited a legacy platform limited to BLE mesh lighting control with a monolithic backend that couldn't scale beyond a handful of buildings. The architecture lacked support for additional protocols, had no abstraction layer for device types, and was not designed for multi-site management.

The Solution

Led architecture modernization to a unified IoT ecosystem - integrating BLE mesh, LoRaWAN, and BACnet protocols through cloud-to-edge logic and edge gateways. Abstracted devices, sites, and protocols into reusable primitives, enabling multi-platform management and rapid onboarding of new device types and building configurations.

Impact

  • 1Deployed to 1,000+ sites across 30+ states
  • 2Managed 40,000+ connected devices (HVAC, lighting, sensors)
  • 3Reduced onboarding time via AI-powered datapoint normalization (days → hours)
Key Decisions
  • Adopted "Service-First" architecture: hardware = commodity; data insights = value
  • Owned the platform end-to-end: roadmap, engineering leadership, QA, technical sales, Tier 3 support, and documentation
  • Led architecture modernization from monolithic BLE-only backend to scalable multi-protocol platform
Lessons Learned
  • "Last mile" in IoT isn't data transmission; it's human-centric interpretation. AI must act as translator, not just collector.

  • Building trust requires transparency: operators need to understand why the system made a recommendation

  • Scaling IoT = scaling operational complexity. Standardization (BACnet, BRICK schema) is non-negotiable
